About
Our Vision
CoIoTIA (Communities of IoT and AI) is a research project that bridges the gap between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Our mission is to enable IoT devices not only to collect and transmit data but also to make smart, local, and context-aware decisions.
The Challenge
IoT devices generate massive amounts of data every second. Traditionally, this data has been sent to powerful cloud servers to run Machine Learning (ML) models. However, this approach creates bottlenecks:
- High latency, unsuitable for real-time decisions.
- Privacy and security concerns.
- High energy consumption and communication costs.
CoIoTIA proposes a smarter alternative: bringing AI closer to the devices themselves.
Our Approach
The project combines three technological pillars:
- IoT – Connected devices at the edge capable of interacting with their environment in real time.
- AI & TinyML – Lightweight, adaptive models that can run directly on IoT devices or fog nodes.
- Blockchain – A secure, transparent, and traceable infrastructure to share models and guarantee trust.
By integrating these pillars, CoIoTIA creates communities of interest (CoI), where devices can share micro-models tailored to their context (time and location) and reuse them to improve adaptability.
Use Cases
CoIoTIA is validated through real-world pilots in different domains:
- 🚚 Last-Mile Logistics – optimising delivery routes with AI-driven micro-models.
- 🌱 Air Quality Monitoring – detecting anomalies in sensor networks.
- 🏠 Indoor Positioning – providing accurate location where GPS fails.
Impact
CoIoTIA opens the door to smarter, greener, and more efficient IoT ecosystems. The platform contributes to:
- Social benefits such as better environmental monitoring, improved mobility, and enhanced quality of life.
- Scientific innovation in AIoT and distributed ML.
- Economic impact by enabling new services in smart cities, healthcare, and logistics.
